Please note: There are two versions of the Modern Greek language. Dimotiki version is the language spoken by the everyday people as it evolved through the centuries of spoken speech and is the language of the folk songs and fairy tales . The katharevoussa version was created by scholars as a bridge between the Ancient Greek and the Modern Greek Language and was imposed in schools and government institutionsas an effort to revive the Ancient Greek past. As it was extremely difficult to grasp, it created a huge gap between the educated and uneducated Greeks. Finally, in 1974 it was abolished. Today, dimotiki is the language used in courts, mass media, schools, and universities of Greece.
